Tire talk (again)

Time for some new tires, I don't do off road except my dirt driveway and 2 miles of the worst washboard road in my county.
I do not like the 18" Connies that were OE, they know nothing about what traction means.
Most of the time I use my truck for towing my ~12.5K 5'er.

My Ford dealer is recommending Michelin LTX M/S2- LT275/65R18/E.
I like the 70K miles for tread warrenty but all of the 1 and 2 star reviews on Sam's Club say they lost 2.5 MPG with these tires, although the 4,000+ 5 star reviews love these.
I like quite tires, and lots of reviews commented on how quite they are.
The price at Ford is the same as Sam's ($269 ea.) but Auto Nation sent me a 10% coupon for parts and service

Anyone use these? Likes/dislikes? MPG drops?

I made the switch from Michelin ltx at2 to ms2 in the 20 in size. Seems like the same ride quality and sound. Both are great. As for the fuel mileage, mine actually went up about .5mpg. The ms2's don't seem to be chunking and wearing as fast as the at2. The few times I get off-road, I don't really need 4x4. The ms2's are pretty descent. The worst I have seen was 4 in deep ga clay on mild hills, pulled out just fine. I spend 75 % of my miles towing a fiver like yours. You will love the ms2's and the warranty.

Nothing wrong with the ltx m/s tires. Good tires. I've always liked them...just prefer my bfg ATS more.

Typically any tire that is more aggressive will get slightly fewer mpgs over all.

I don't get so wound up over it as there is so much mathmatical noise in mpg calculations any way that its not worth loosing sleep over.

Well said. Go with trusted quality tire and you won't be disappointed.

They're not cheaper but I like the cooper a/t3 tires. They lasted me a long time and perform well in all conditions. I've become a cooper fan because they're made in the USA, lasted me over 60,000 miles, and performed great.

The 18" size might be priced better than the 20's, so maybe check them out if you want an alternative to help you decide to pull the trigger.

I'm running the Michelin LTX M/S2- LT275/70R18/E on my F250 wrapped around a set of 9" wide wheels and wouldn't swap them for anything.. quiet, smooth, plenty of traction and plenty of load capacity for hauling my 12.5K 5'er..

Bought mine at Discount Tire..

I had Nitto Terra Grapplers on my 2011 F350 SRW. Primarily because they have a high load rating. I think they were rated at around 4050 lbs. And they looked great.

When I sold the truck they had around 45K on them and still looked great.

The MS2's are great tires. When these AT2's wear out that's what I'm getting. I have been using them for years on a heavy duty truck. They are much quieter than the At's. They will also last a lot longer. Better mileage too. I have recommended them to other guys and they now feel the same way.

I run GY Duratrac's as they are snow rated and I don't want to be swapping 6 tires for winter time. Work great in the snow but they do like to bring stones home with them.

I had the MS/2's on my last truck - agree that they are great, quiet, good milage and lasted extremely well. Even though they are hwy tires, mine saw a lot of offroad in Baja.

I need a bit more of an aggressive tread pattern now, but if your truck lives mostly on the hwy, I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

My original AT2s will be worn out in spring. Had MS2s on my last F250 and really liked them. They lasted longer than my current AT2s and I thought that they were a better tire too. Will likely purchase a set of MS2s as my next tire.

I wore out a set of MS/2's..good tires..Got many miles out of them. I got ContiTR's now and they have been great. 2 set's actually. Only because got a set used cheap. And used my spare and bought only 3 others. I'm ready for a set of MS/2's now. I put on about 30000 a year.

Had that same tire as original equipment. Got about 50K out of them. Ran good but seem to loose traction on wet roads as they aged. I went to the Cooper Discovered A/T3. Cost less, American made, good ride, and with more aggressive tread. They are quiet. I have run the Coopers for years have always gotten good service.

Both the Michelin MS/2's and their AT's I have had were made in the USA.

You probably right. I do not know where Michelin makes their tires, but they are owned somewhere else, I guess still in France.
