The 6.0 is a great engine if it is maintained well. It's under engineered on a few points (headstuds) but most if not all other 'problem' areas are usually caused by maintenance issues.
IT doesn't make sense why the truck looks like it's in such good shape yet needs so much work on the engine.
You would think if someone is so meticulous about the inside that the engine gets maintained well too ?

I've encountered quite a few people that are under the misconception that since diesels are known to run forever, they don't require as much maintenance. Absolutely pitiful.

There's also the select group of special people that don't do anything unless the CEL comes on, and then they think it just needs an oil change because Uncle George told 'em that's an indicator of the oil being due.

The statement is self explanatory towards the type of diesel guys in my area. If you want to be specific to that engine I will say " I turned the pump up and roll coal and do nothing but waste fuel and think I make a ton of power.

My statement was my experience in my area and was no way directed at anyone here. I just get a kick out of the cummins cult like following. You always know when one is around because in their mind cummins is the only way anything else is junk.

If you fall in any of those categorie and are offended sorry

those guys aren't so bad here. I used to get a lotttttt. Of shiz when I started going to the mud bogs with a 6.5 Burban. Guess what tho it never blew up and I drove it home every time I was done. When I got stuck I rolled up the windows and turned the air on. They all thought I was nuts.

Also great edit to the post, last but not least sorry OP for the slight hijack I'm done if I didn't stir the pot too bad

Your doing the right thing on getting the 6.0 rebuilt. The price tag sucks, but I would have tried to do some of the work myself to try and lower that. Your engine will be bulletproof to say the least and it will last a long time. You guys have to remember that while other people can do an engine rebuild for a lot less, most times they are doing it themselves and don't take in the factor of what labor costs. Most of the shops around here that work on Fords are all at $100 or more an hour. I don't know what the labor rate for said above repair, but it sounds like the shop isn't ripping him. Keep the pictures coming brother!

They're about the same engine with a different fueling system... But that's my plan anyhow.

Not offended in the least. Lots of bad apples in any group. Diesel has become the new rice. Instead of a 5 ft tall wing, neon lights, and a coffee can exhaust, they've got 12 inch stacks, 22.5 inch Alcoa semi wheels, and trailer hitch *********.

I like the Cummins for the cheapness of parts and because I'm more familiar with it.

I currently have a 2001 Ram 2500 with the Cummins. Mostly stock, doesn't smoke. I didn't need to bullet proof it and the only maintenance it gets is an oil change every 15K miles.

For what it's worth, I did get coal rolled on me by a Powerstroke.

I think I'm going to start carrying a bag of charcoal in my truck and throwing it at priuses when they get in my way on the freeway... It's as close as I can get to rolling coal
