Towing
#16
I order the 10.5 is a Yukon Gear 4.30:1. My friend which is the owner of a transmission shop is going to replace them. I hope it makes a difference once I tow my race car trailer. I heard I have to brake them in before I start towing. I guess it makes sense. Some good Lucas oil and good to go. Truck is going in next week. I'll give feedback once I drive it. Thanks for the info guys.

Trailer weights without the car in it 3,740 lbs
with car in it 6,965 lbs
Combine with truck etc 14,085 lbs.
I went with 4.30:1 gears because I have stock height tires and not planning on going with taller tires.
I want the truck to be at around 2100 rpm around 60-65 mph so it will keep it in overdrive and not struggle when a little bit of highway hill makes it kick down gear.

Just a little FYI for you all; I recently did a gear swap on a '95 F250 4x4 that had the Dana 50 TTB front axle and the 10.25 rear axle.
Dana 50 gears from a TTB will work in a solid Dana 50. I used Solid 50 gears in my TTB and worked fine. New Dana 50 TTB gears are cheaper than Solid D50 gears for some odd reason but are not different in any way.
The ring gear is greatly different between 10.50 and 10.25 axles, but some parts are interchangeable. I have experimented with several sets over the years int he '95 truck and have found the following;
You can use 10.25 gears in your 10.50, the weakness with the 10.25 gear is the ring gear. The 10.25 ring gear is nearly 1/2" thinner than the 10.50 ring gear in all ratios. With this, you gain thickness in the pinion gear. So, its a toss up. 10.25 gears have a stronger pinion, and 10.50 gears have a stronger ring gear. I would recommend using 10.25 gears in both the 10.25 and 10.50 axles as most of the stress in an axle is concentrated on the pinion gear.
I have also found that 10.50 gears with ratios over 3.73 (i.e. 4.10/4.56) WILL NOT WORK IN 10.25 AXLES!!!! The sheer size of the pinion gear "head" will contact the case near the inner pinion bearing. This cannot be corrected.
Also, used gears are just as good as new gears. I have NEVER purchased a set of new ring and pinion gears unless I was unable to find them used. They all take the same setup procedure and if inspected good, used gears will last just as long as new ones. Save yourself hundreds and look into used gears before you order new.

Ok gears are in. Here is the thing. When I dropped the truck at my friend's shop, about an hour later he calls me and said to come by. He ask me, have you ever heard any type of noise in the rear end. I said never, why. He showed me the carrier bearing were all pitted, metal got into the bearing race etc. He said even if you were not going to put gears eventually you would of had to get in it. This reard end has never been taken out all this is from the Manufacturer, hum!. Anyway gears are in and drove it. Here is the question since these are 4.30 gears I can hear a very low gears noise at about 65 mph nothing that is loud and annoying. Is this because the low gear itself, meaning more teeth count. I drove it for about 10 mile and then put the truck away for the night. Then drive it in the morning a bit farther. The only thing I notice is at 65 mph the rpm is at 2100 rpm in over drive not bad. I have not towed yet, I wonder if this is going to make a difference in towing.

I wish I could afforded the OEM gears, but I could not find a set of 4.30's below 400.00 for a set.

How long does it take to break in the new gears? What all needs to be done to replace them? How much did it cost to have it done? I need to be able to tow a 9000lbs camper 800 miles shortly after having them installed. Are you guys happy with Randy's Ring and Pinion? I am thinking of getting the 4.30's I have stock tires 265/75/16. I use my truck mostly as a daily driver so I need to keep it reliable and not lose much more gas mileage.
I have 3 weeks to get this done. Thanks for your help.

I spent $2.5k , but i added limited slip at the same time. you'll do fine with 4.30s unless you go bigger tire. My gear guy said "drive it" but me wanting to be careful, i took mine out for a few 20 mile drives to get a couple heat cycles in before i pulled anything. I'm sure Randys is fine so long as your installer (you?) is ok with them, i went local in case there were any problems they could discuss it face to face, im sure that cost me a few more $

Ok feedback on my towing. I finally could go to the track. So loaded the car and tools etc. What a difference!! Truck when I take off I don't have to push the throttle half way like when it had the 3.73's. Pulls great, it burn fuel amount about the same when it had the 3.73. Now does not drop gears, in the highway does not drop gear in a slightly hill, it keeps pulling. Speed was at about 62-69 mph I even notice that it went about 70 mph and slow it down. The only issue I have is that around 50-58 mph the truck starts a shaking, I have balanced these tires twice. I'm suspecting that the left rear rim is out of round because it took a lot of weights to get it to balance, stock wheels. I think that the wheels on the trailer need to be balanced. I look and they don't have any kinds of weights on any of them. Could that be the cause. The air bags has amplified this more.
