custom HD rear coil springs? group buy?

I've been entertaining the idea of having some custom coil springs made for my expedition.

it just seems like anytime i have a trailer on the rear end sags a ton more than i would like and the ride really goes to crap. the last vehicle i had this problem on was my old explorer and i installed air bags to fix the problem. but that's not really an option.

my thoughts are to have a set of custom, progressive rate coils made. if done right, one should be able to set the spring rates such that they are close to the original spring rate and height during no-load conditions, but get progressively stiffer as you load it down.

just wondering if there would be any interest in a group buy.

i have no interest in making this a side venture or anything like that, just wondering if anyone else would be interested. rather than make a run of one, i could have as many made as those who want to order.

anyone else think they might have a use for such an item?

initial research puts the price in the $250-$350 range for a pair of custom coils.

one company wanted $1500!

regardless, not sure if there is much interest, but the company i found is out of KS and makes them in thier shop (Coil Spring Specialists). the springs can be tailor made depending on how much tongue weight or additional cargo weight one expects. looks like a 1-3 week lead time for them to make them, and they are willing to entertain the idea of a discount for multiple orders.

if there is any interest, let me know and i'll do a little more work on it.

I would consider it. not sure i'd want to be guinea pig though. We haul around about a 3500lb travel trailer, not huge, but it still made it squat a little. eventually would like to get into something a little longer

Hi meborder,
This thread is obviously a few days old (maybe a little older), but I happened to dig it up because I am in desperate need of stiffer coils. I have a lifted Expy 03 and have built in some heavy stuff. Did you get those coils? Can you please share your experience also regarding the company (Coil Spring Specialists) as the info you get on their website is rather basic?
Thanks,

Hi Sanddriver!

Never went anywhere with it. I found that Super springs make a coil spacer (sumo coil spring, IIRC) for our trucks and took the gamble on those instead.

They do work fairly well. I found out after a year of using them that I had ordered the spacers, though. When I ordered them I got goofed up and ordered a set or spacers for the front, instead of the rear.

So instead of the spacers going around one full coil-plus, the ones I have go about 7/8 of the way around, but they still seem to work pretty well.

I think heavier coils would be better, but I mitigated the problem with the spacers for about 1/3 the price. And I can live with what it is.

if my next family hauler is an expedition with coils, I might look at getting different coils made, but for this one, the sumo coil spring spacers are working pretty well.

Hi Mike,
Thank you for your prompt reply, appreciate it!
I will give Coil Spring Specialities a try, because I really want/need this stiffer ride.
