I've had a couple 4.9s that showed 300k on the odometer, but who knows if they were rebuilt before I got it.

My fathers E4OD has 160k miles. The truck has been in the family since new and was used to pull around a 26' camper every summer.

I just bought a '92 with the 4.9 and it has 223k miles on it. To my knowledge it's never been rebuilt and doesn't seem to be in need of one anytime soon. My father in law had a '95 that had 290k on it when he sent it to cash for clunkers (still mad at him for that!).

I had a 95 that went 170k miles an blew a head gasket and knocked pretty good. And i had an 87 that lasted 125k and the head cracked. And my dads 94 has 109k and that one gets beat to death being a farm truck yet its had less problems than the 2 i had that were just drivers.

I have a '96 XLT 4x4 4.9l with 5-speed M5OD transmission. The truck has 165,000 miles on it (odometer goes to 6 digits) at this point and it runs quite strong. The engine is original and not rebuilt.

My dad's old 80' 4.9 made it to about 280k before the rest of the truck was rotten beyond safety and the truck was scrapped. The. My E4OD has 218000 behind a 5.8 and seems healthy, fair amount of towing/hauling but mostly highway mileage. The year of the E4OD will make a difference in it's longevity, newer the stronger built.

That said, maintenance is most important. My grandpa can destroy a truck in 80,000 miles because he doesn't do anything to them (the occasional engine oil change is about it), and short drives them whereas plenty other guys maintain their trucks and get 200k+ on original running gear.

Steve83 @ FSB has a JY 4.9 that he pulled out of an 85k mile truck, then put 550k+ miles on with no rebuild. He is still running the engine to this day...
