Tuned 7.3 vs. Stock 6.0

First off, I don't want this to become a 7.3 vs 6.0 battle royal. Both engines have their pitfalls, and aftermarket suppliers have taken care of most all pitfalls in both platforms. I'm simply curious about power output.

I have a 2001 Excursion, 7.3 with forged rods (discovered that yesterday. Very nice surprise). With a tune only on the 7.3, otherwise stock motor, it seems they make anywhere from ~275 to ~305 at the wheels depending on tuner and dyno. Assuming I'm using a DP-Tuner on the 120 race setting, how does that compare to a bone stock 6.0? Looking at dyno graphs, they appear similar. I couldn't find any runs perfectly analogous to what I'm seeking, but a stock 6.0 and tuned 7.3 also seem to have similar 1/4 mile times (both low 16's to high 15's).

So does this seem correct? The only comparisons I could find were tuned vs tuned or modded vs modded. Just curious how they compare.

Power output in terms of what? How they look on paper? How they tow? How they race?

How they tow and how they race. Whatever someone has experience with. With what dyno graphs I could find, they seemed similar, so I would've made the assumption that they tow similarly. Since that's a fairly steady state, my assumption would be that whichever is quicker to rev is largely irrelevant. Furthermore, I would've guessed the 6.0 would be faster in a drag, because it's rev happy. The 1/4 miles seemed too similar to support that reasoning though. However, those dyno's weren't at the same dyno or on the same day, and neither were the drags, so they really can't be directly compared. I'm just curious to see if anyone has first hand experience either way.

You won't find many race comparisons because most who take their truck to the drag do more than just a chip to the 7.3, and they do more than just stock to the 6.0.

Towing has a lot of variables, so that's a tough comparison too. It's really going to come down to preference and budget as to which folks prefer in these cases.

I must say I drag raced a stock 6.0 dually loaded with gear I might add with my Excursion 7.3 with the edge evolution down our deserted shop road one night and won. Not by a huge amount though and he had his transfer tank and stuff in his truck too so it's not exactly apples to apples.

I can't help with your question but would like to add that the Torqshift 5-speed behind the 6.0 also makes a huge difference in drive-ability/towing vs the 4R100 behind the 7.3.

Agree!! The 6.0 has a better tranny for towing. There's more to towing than moving that trailer. A lot more actually.

My heavily-modified 7.3L hasn't raced anybody, but two separate chipped-only 6.0L owners have stated they can do what Stinky did here.

Those are some nice long marks, lol. I primarily drove a 6.0 F350 in Iraq, and it was a fun truck, even stock. I've never pulled anything with one though. With the 5r transmission, is is that the gear splits are much better with the extra gear? Or moreso the transmission control logic?

I was thoroughly shocked when I spotted them in the rearview, hence the stop and the photo. The part that never ceases to amaze me is loosing Stinky's butt when the Torque Converter locks.

I've had some fast rigs, like the '66 Mustang with the 289 and a 4spd, but nothing ever threw me back like this - particularly going uphill.

If you want apples to oranges here.... My mostly stock truck. The only similarly you're trying to compare between these two engines is the injection systems.
Here's what a stock CP3 does.

Tugly, that must really kick when she locks up, lol. Have you had it on a dyno?

Good ol' common rail. Getting my first experience with it once I finish installing this 2.0 liter Common Rail TDI. I wish it had a CP3 though. It came with a CP4.1, which has a less than stellar track record. A retrofit kit using a CP4.2 (6.7 PowerStroke, current Duramax) is right about to come out, but someone else is working on a CP3 kit. I'd be all over that given its record, even though it's lower pressure (1600 Bar).

The 6.0 holds back better than the 7.3's do. To my knowledge, there is no mod you can do to the 7.3 automatic that will hold back like the 6.0. The 6.4's are about the same I believe. But, a 6.7, now that is a real towing machine! And I believe the gas engines of the same years are about as good as far as holding back and controlling the loads.

My son's stock 6.0 will flog my slightly modified 7.3 with DP 80 horse tune.

Better off the line response and gains at every shift. Never done a full quarter mile but but it would be several lengths by then IMO.

Never compared side by side towing, but the 6.0 is definitely a better driving experience and is at least as good as mine.

Sounds like the general consensus is a stock 7.3 with a tuner will still be edged out by a stock 6.0. Had a feeling that might be the case. I still love my 7.3's though. Maybe she'll get injectors, HPOP and a turbo someday to make up the differences. Still be great to see a tuned 7.3 run a stock 6.0 for **its and giggles.
