My friend had his brand new, less than one month, Black with gold bottom F350, 6.7, Dually, Lariat stolen around Jackson, MS last night.

Are there any details..like left unlocked or how was it broken into? Was it just towed away?

 

Parked at hotel under a light, next morning gone. Was locked and key removed.

 

It was towed away, without fail. On such a vehicle so new with PATS and so many other electronic modules that need to "shake hands" before the vehicle will even operate, there isn't any other way possible it was removed other than the method described in the first sentence of this post. Anyone who would be bold enough in this day and age to do anything criminal has ***** of steel in my mind. Does the hotel have any kind of video surveillance? Do you and the police have access to view it? Please keep me posted on the outcome of this. I would be very interested in knowing. It is mind boggling that festering piles of human excrement like this exist on our planet.

 

Failing that method, someone with access to an IDS (Scan tool used by dealership techs) made another key to the vehicle where it was last at a facility where a scan tool was connected, and then tracked the vehicle's movement and drove it away at the first opportunity. If it's only a month old, the first place to look at is the selling dealer. But in all honesty, the scenario described above is highly unlikely. To get a key cut and programmed at any dealer these days, they will request proof of ownership before one will be made.

Just an FYI Senix, as an ex-tow truck driver, backing in would have only slightly slowed me down if I needed to hook your truck. It'll drag out with the winch just fine. And I've pulled plenty of "dead" cars (and trucks) out of tight parking spaces with my old flatbed by putting a ****** block at the last D-ring at the rear of the bed (with the bed back and down of course). Can drag it out, then pull the ****** block, and winch the front end sideways and straight up the bed. Sounds more complicated than it is really. Piece of cake.

Long story short, don't think backing in will stop it from being towed. It won't.

To the OP, sorry to hear about your friends truck. More than likely it was towed. It's probably stripped and chopped by now.

 

update, he did leave a spare key buried in the console. Maybe they found that after breaking in, but shouldn't the alarm go off?

How hard is it to pop the key pad off and hot wire the key pad to open the door?

 

Ouch...I wonder if insurance will cover him if he left a key in the cab.

 

When parking, would turning the front wheels all the way help? It wouldn't tow straight anyway.

Stories like this only motivate me even more to want to purchase an alarm that will not only sound off a siren so loud that it will literally deafen any person within two minutes of hearing it, but will also place a phone call to my cellphone and the local police department immediately. If such an alarm exists, I'm all ears.

If I can get all the way straight behind it with my flatbed, then "No." It's gone. I can just walk the bed under the truck, using the winch to "hold" it in place while going up the bed, and when the edge of the bed hits the front tires, lift and pull. Again, piece of cake.

Think of it like sliding a spatula under neath a pancake.

If it's backed in...

hook up and pull the front tires up onto the bed, then put a couple pieces of wood (2x4's or 4x4's) wedged against the front tires to keep them from rolling, and just winch it straight up the bed like the wheels were straight anyway.

The hardest would be if it's nosed in, wheels turned hard, there was a vehicle parked on both sides of it (or other obstacle), and I couldn't get my flatbed straight behind it. Then I'd need dollies for the front tires. Can still be done, but takes more time.

 

All backing in does is keep the honest crooks honest. Maybe the truck next door would be more appealing I guess.
