limping home

Like so many others, I have seen the "wrench" display itself. The problem is that I just bought this beast - 2005 6.0 l with 74,000 original miles. REALLY!
On the first trip, pulling a 7000lb trailer, I get the wrench after 40 miles. I have read from so many forums and there does not seem to be a definitive answer to this particular problem. Idles well, runs great without a load, no coughing, farting, burbing, nothing unusual other than this loss of power and its not being used hard. Happens on the level while cruising at 1750 rpms. Someone has got to know the cause. Please. Thanks!

Can you scan it for stored codes?
The scan tools at the local parts store will miss
a lot of the codes. Where are you ? Maybe someone
can help you if they are near you.

Typically shutting the truck off and turning it back on will reset the limp mode condition. You will want to see if there are any codes. Just my guess, is probably an over/under boost condition. I had the same issue pulling a load, and had a p0299 code. There are a handful of things that can cause this, and most of them are pretty easy to fix/check.

Start with cleaning the egr valve.

Next step, you gotta get some gauges. I use torque pro and it will do 90% of what you need. It'll cost $5 for the android app and $20 for a good Bluetooth reader from fleabay. There are other options, but all more expensive. Next least expensive option is scan gage ii.

Without gauges, you will chase your tail a lot.

Can someone clarify, I thought I read somewhere that newer PCM strategies will trip the wrench and cause limp mode for excessive oil/coolant temp differences

You are correct. That's why he needs something to measure the temps and other vitals to see what's going on, and prevent future hg's problem, if that's why it's throwing the light. I was actually thinking the same thing.

Just what I was thinking too. IF it has the latest flash. You could check at a dealer if the pcm has been reflashed to VXCF9

Limping home

Thanks to all for your input!!! I need to acquire the appropriate code scanner then get on with a resolution (I hope). I'm so new to diesels its embarrassing. EGR cleaning is on for this afternoon however, I have seen no evidence of white smoke and the darn thing runs so good (except when loaded) I'm stumped. Have a had a really bad experience with the almost local ford dealership and my V10 Super Duty. Yup. Got one of those spark plug throwers also. Anyway, thanks again. I'll stay with you guys and hopefully learn something.

Pulled the EGR today. I've never seen an interior part as disgusting as this was. Caked with carbon (actually chunks that could be flicked off). If it has ever been out, I'd be surprised. It couldn't possibly have been working right. Bottom O ring is marginal so replacing all. This may not solve my problem with the "wrench", but it sure can't hurt. Thanks for the tip.

If the egr was that nasty do yourself a favor and clean the iat2 sensor. If you look on the intake manifold it is behind the oil/fuel filter bowls to words the firewall it sticks straight up with a connector. Pull it and clean the snot out if it too it will be caked.

He's right. Here are a couple of pics of mine.

I'm not sure if solvents will hurt it but I just used a small brush from a gun cleaning kit.
