Dual Exhaust Diameter?

Tore off most of my exhaust on a rock today on a logging road...very sad day

However, silver linings...time for a proper dual exhaust. So I bought some headers that go into a 3" collector. What diameter tubing and mufflers do you recommend? It's a 272 pretty much stock. Not looking for a hot rod, just reliability. The headers are what I would consider to be long tube headers. I wanted to have the mufflers dump just in front of the rear wheels, so it'll be relatively short. 3" all the way back seemed excessive and like there wouldn't be enough back pressure. This 2 1/2" is reasonable?

Any help is appreciated!

The muffler shop put 3" on my 429, so 2 1/2" for the 272 seems right,
