engine compression test with oil pressure gauge???

I have a '66 Ford F100 with an inline 240. Can I do a compression test with an oil pressure gauge?

Oh wait. The gauge only goes to 140 psi So I think I just answered my question. But is there a shade tree way of checking the compression. Keep in mind I am broke as can be and need a home remedy here. I do have an air holding tank and I have heard of using one before. But I have never done it. What do I do here?

A vacuum gauge will accurately indicate engine health with good (or poor) compression, as well as valve issues, exhaust restrictions, etc, much quicker and easier and without wear and tear on starter and battery.

Has more utility too in that it is used for setting engine timing and carburetor idle mixture, too.

No problem! Everyone should have a vacuum gauge if they are going to work on or maintain old iron. Inexpensive and one of the handiest, easy to use tools around. Should be first choice if owning an older rig.

Many auto parts stores will loan tools for free with the expectation that they will get to sell you parts. Try them.....
