1988 E350 4x4 fuel pump
#16
My E250 has the back pump and rail pump replaced. Did away with the selector and also replaced the tank itself. Lotta rust scale in there. That scale may be chewing up your pumps but I'd think the screen should keep it out. But if the screens are stopping up and starving the pumps it may be your issue.

Yeah, like contaminated fuel/rust in the fuel tanks! How long had the van been setting at the time of purchase, 3-4 years--or?
Cleaning those tanks is a pain. Many mechanics are only too happy to charge you for pump replacement while ignoring the rust and fuel contamination.
Replacement fuel tanks are readily available for this application.

I am confident my mechanic cleaned the tanks. He is a perfectionist and runs a two man operation although I understand what you are saying about. I'm going to change the fuel selector valve first and see if that resolves the pump problem.
Is it ok to switch tanks while the engine is running or am I supposed to switch then start it back up? This is my first experience with a dual tank setup.

I'm not sure if the van sat for a long time before I got it. It was used as a grip truck by the movie lighting company that I bought it from. The owner took very good care of it, ie; changing the oil every 2,000 miles.

On my 92 F-150, the system is different, the in tank pumps are high pressure so no main pump on the frame rail. I always drove on one tank until it coughed then switched tanks. I got 116,000 miles on one pump, 123,000 on the other. The pumps were still fine, the check valve in the pump assembly failed causing the running pump to overfill the other tank.
