Best way to cure turbo surge?

I had some pretty bad turbo surge while towing about 4500lbs last week.

What is the most effective way to cure the turbo surge? I will now be making monthly 800 mile trips towing between 4500 and 7000lbs.

I've read things about a wicked wheel curing it. How hard are these to install? Any write ups?

Truck is a 2003 7.3, details in sig

Try a search, there are tons of posts on this topic.

Most say a new wheel or ported shroud compressor housing. Or both.

I just did the housing and was happy with the results.

There are a couple different ways to go about it: A different compressor wheel(WW,WW2, Riffraff wheel) or a ported compresser housing(ATS)

The wheel is probably the cheapest(money wise) but slightly more labor intensive. Last I checked you could get a wheel for anywhere between $100 and $250.

The ATS ported housing is around $425 and is slightly easier to install.

Both can be done without removing the turbo from the truck, but some find it easier to remove the turbo.

They all do the job just comes down to personal preference.

I went with the housing in order not to loose boost at the top end. My understanding is the WW gives up some top end boost but does help eliminate surge. My vote would be the housing, or if bigger injectors are in your future, consider stepping up to the 38R.
