86 ranger 2.9 issues

My Ranger starts only when I spray starter fluid into the air intake. It does stay running and it drives fine. The engine will not fire up unless I do this process. I have cleaned out the fuel rail, fuel injectors, purchased new fuel filter, and tested fuel pressure (which is good). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just something to think about, maybe the fuel pump isn't getting power while the engine is in crank mode. Using either lets it start, and then you let off the key, and then the pump gets juice, so it keeps running.

Question

what is your fuel pressure on the nose. any idiot lights on the dash should have a check engine light. did you check fuel psi key on engine off key of engine off and wide open throttle. were are you checking fuel pressure at and when you crank the engine assuming your mil works does it go out when the key is on start. have your tried pulling codes from the engine and is this the original engine to this truck. one last thing are you using either sorry for all the questions.

By all means. I would appreciate the help. The tapping...is that something to do with the oil pressure or the oil pump?

could be oil pressure related this truck should have hydraulic lifters could be one or more not pumping up and not creating zero lash. do you have an oil pressure gauge try that see if their is an issue. if oil is not making its way to the cylinder head or both banks start the engine then shut it off and check the oil it should be a bit low for the count of oil that should be in the cylinder heads. could also be time for an oil change can you recall when it had that try taking a screw driver and put it up near a intake port and listen see if all of the valves or none are tapping it could be oil pressure maybe not get some proof and should be fairly straight forward as to what to do or what is going on. and about the simplest thing i should have said is it could be just low on oil .

ok...I did the screwdriver test...From what I think I'm suppose to hear, I think they are ok. Gonna do an engine flush/oil/filter change. The oil hadn't been changed in awhile...and when I obtained the truck it sat for about 3 months...so yeah...oil change underway.

sounds good these trucks are know for valve train noise as long as thing are getting oil it should be fine little noise never hurt anything just the sound of an old engine ticking i have put stp in the engine oil for treatment of valve noise does not fix anything just quiets it up or ran a little thicker oil you should be good with what it is supposed to use good luck. by the way does it go away when you accelerate the engine.
