1991 F150 won't shift into Low Range.

I have a 1991 f150 5.8L. It shifts into 4HI just fine but it will only shift down to 4LO when the engine is off. I've already messed with the linkage and concluded that is not the problem... when I turn the engine off and shift into 4LO and start the engine, it works fine. Is that process bad for any of the components? Any info will help. Thanks!

How are you trying to put it into 4lo. in gear in park ?

Truck must be at a stand still.
Push on the brake.
Put truck in Neutral
to shift from 4hi to 4lo you have to push down on the stick then shift from 4hi to 4lo
if truck still will not go into 4lo put it back into 4hi put it in gear roll forward a little bit and put it in neutral and shift again from 4hi to 4lo.

Thanks man, I miss the two-tone. My '81 was two-tone, nothing says OBS other than a two-toned truck!

Crewcabber, I've done all of that but it doesn't want to go in. I went under and found the linkage was loose and tightened it but that didn't help. I've gotten it to go in before though...

I know I said it before but make sure when you got to shift form 4hi to 4lo when you grab the stick push down on it then pull back. Sometimes the get a little finicky with age and mileage.

I removed the plate that has the guide with the notch that the shifter follows, but it still doesn't want to go into 4lo.

Ok Press the stick down not forward. The notches aren't going to make any difference unless you push the stick down before you pull backwards on it. Its like the old chevy 4 speeds Volkswagens and blah blah blah. Push DOWN not forward.
