Transmission Fluid Change HD4R100

I've found great how-to instructions via https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...and-video.html but have a quick question regarding the following Mark K suggests:

"One person starts the engine, while the other holds the line over the drain bucket. A clothes pin can replace the person holding the line in the bucket.
Run the engine until you see some air in the clear tubing. As soon as you see air shut off the engine."

Question: While one is watching the line, can another person not be pouring ATF in at the same rate as what's being pumped into the bucket from the coolant return line?

Give it a try, if it does not work, please post back. Don't think you can pour fluid in as fast as the pump will remove it. But, who knows?

I go to oil change place, they put the truck on a machine let it run it pumps out all the old fluid as it replaces with all new fluid. While I sit in the truck and read the paper. Easy Peasy..

When I did the procedure, it made sense to me to watch for air and shut down, so that I would know how much fluid was pumped out, and how much I was adding. Since the color of the fluid was not much different, it was helpful to follow the procedure to add the right amount of fluid back in.

I feel like if there was an easier/better way of doing it, the automatic transmission engineer would've thought of it already!! LOL

The problems with pouring it down the tube as it comes out is trying to get the right amount in, and probably getting it in fast enough. I suppose it could be done, but it seems to me to make it harder, not easier.

Thanks, all. The point regarding the ability to refill as fast as the return line is draining indeed sounds like the hole / bottle neck in my plan. I'll still likely be giving it a shot and will report back.
