No pulling power to front wheels 96 Explorer

I've done a buch of reading and did all the checks to see if my 4WD is working correctly. While in park and truck running I spun the front wheel, the other wheel spun opposite direction. Also while in neutral and in 4WD I hand turned the front axle, front wheels spun. I even went as far as putting all 4 wheels off the ground and while in 4WD put truck in drive. All 4 wheels spun.

Now when I took it on the beach and truck in 4 low, I gave it a little gas while watching the tires. I see the rear turning up the sand much like a peel out but no action from the front. It's like I'm not getting pulling power of torque front my front wheels. I was told while in 4 low I suppose to get 50/50 from front and rear.

Can anyone tell me what might be wrong?

This sounds like the same problem I am having with my 96 explorer. except I haven't checked to see if my 4x4 works at all. I do know my automatic motor on the transfer case is working because it definitely does shift into "4 low" but I don't seem to get the "4" part at all. I suspect my automatic hubs are dead. could be your problem too. do you have auto 4x4 and auto hubs as well? (auto meaning push button)

There's something called the "brown wire mod" which disables the electromagnetic clutch sending drive to the front wheels.

It's purpose is to disconnect the front wheels to save gas, it does disconnect butit doesn't save gas.

Some previous owner might have done the mod or maybe the brown wire got damaged or maybe the electromagnet is cactus.

Do as earch for brown wire mod to see if that's what you've got.
