It's the same thing. It's just different ways to say 2wd. It's the same thing with 4x4 and 4wd. 2x4 or 2wd means only 2 wheels turn under power to the axle, ie, the rear wheels. 4x4 or 4wd means that all wheels turn under power to the axles. In short, if someone tells you they have 2wd and someone else tells you they have 2x4, they mean the same thing.

I may be wrong here but I thought of it as 2x4 = 2 power wheels by 4 wheels and 4x4 = 4 power wheels by 4 wheels, and so on like Dodge's concept 6x6. But it only refers to rear wheel drive vehicles.
Again I may be wrong. But like anything else as long as you know what it means it doesn't really matter what you use to remember it.
