7.5L lost spark

I was messing around with my speedometer cluster and took it out and put another one in but it was for an IDI and it would start but would die when I put it in drive. I think the ABS sensors were different, so I changed the clusters back to my old one and my truck lost spark or it goes in and out. If it does start it idols like crap for about 30 seconds and then dies. I replaced the icm box from a junk yard a few days agao because it died on me and it fixed the problem since then. I changed all plugs and wires and cap and rotor but still having the same issue, I ordered a new ICM box but it won't come till tomorrow. Is there anything that would mess the engine up from running because I screwed with the dash cluster or no. I'm just not sure if I just got another bad ICM box.

The ICM that goes in your 1994 truck is Black in color. The Gray one will not work very well. Do not buy the ICM you have ordered if it is not black. The Gray ones are for older trucks and do not let the parts guys tell you anything else.

You may have a bad PIP sensor inside the distributor as the Black ICM very seldom goes bad.

What year truck was the cluster out of?
I do not think the cluster caused your problem.

Thanks for the help!

The Cluster was out of a 92 IDI and ICM box was out of a 90 7.5l dump truck

The PIP sensor is that the same thing as the coil that's inside of the distributor?

There is no coil inside the distributor. The old Durasperk II Ignition system had a pick up coil but the newer FI EEC-IV trucks do not. They have solid state switch called a PIP sensor mounted on a stator assembly.

The ICM box was out of a 90 7.5l dump truck would be the wrong one and would be Gray in color.
I have never heard it called a box before.

As for the cluster it will not work either unless you swap a few wires from plug to plug.

Your right I checked right now they are different in color I really would of never noticed that, thanks a lot! I will see if the one they send me tomorrow is the same and if it fixes the problem. If not I'll look in to the PIP

Is it a pain to replace the PIP. And just in case do you also think it could be the actual coil and if so would the one of the 7.5l dump truck be compatible?

The 92's distributor should work in the 94 if they are both 7.5L engines.
Yes it is a pain to change the PIP sensor as you have to press the gear off the shaft to get the shaft out to change the stator assembly.

Great info here from another Forum: Ford TFI Ignition Control Modules - FSB Forums

I think if you ask for an ICM for a '94-'95 Mustang you will get the correct one. Or have the parts counter jockey cross-reference on Motorcraft Part# DY1077

I found an ICM and still no change, if I replace the pip sensor couldn't I just replace the entire distributor because I have one off of a 1989 460 motor but I don't know if they are comparable

Yes the distributor off the 1989 will also fit your 1994 460 engine.
