How to identify # of axle splines?

Copy and paste from the van thread, figured someone over here might know too

Hello everyone,

Doing some web wheeling / day dreaming / window shopping for a traction adder in the van. Probably won't get to do one this year but I'd like to.

Anyway, is there an easy way to identify what spline count my rear axle has? I know its a Dana 60 full float but I dont know if its a 30 or 35 spline. I'm figuring its probably the 35 since its a full float with 4.10s but guessing gets me nowhere.

1989 e250 7.3 diesel in my sig

Thanks!
Jason

either pull the code on the tag and a lot of internet looking, or count them. its easy to pull an axle on a full floater no jack needed.

Yep no jack, just drive up on a block on one side to keep the oil from leaking out.

Thanks Bill! You're a wealth of knowledge sir. She's got the full float so that means I have the 30 splines, now I can window shop more accurately

Seen odd to anyone else that the semi floaters have more splines than the full floaters?

Not to me it doesn't, since I have the 1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog.

Left upper: Notice the parts lists of #286 & #287 for the E250/350 Dana 60 full floater.

Right upper: Parts list #286 / Left lower: Parts list #287

Notice in both these parts lists that the axle shafts are E7UZ-4234-A Right & E7UZ-4234-B Left.

Right lower: Troll thru these axle shaft part numbers until you find E7UZ-4234-A & E7UZ-4234-B / What is the spline count for both? 30

I wasnt saying you were wrong, just that the full floater is the heavier axle, and that more splines are typically stronger. Seemed odd that the lighter axle would have more splines.
