AOD / AOD-E Hybrid?

On the german Econoline-Forum, there's a problem we couldn't figure out yet:

A '93 E150 with 302 has a damaged transmission.
Probably because a previous owner fixed the TV-Cable with a hose clamp

It always cracked when you started driving and got worse.
After dropping off the pan, the oil was total black - after 6000miles and a complete overhaul in '08 - and there was a big chunk of debris on the Magnet.
Later on the Van moved only when you pushed the gas gently - a bit more and it won't move (slipping clutches?).

Long story short:
He bought a new Transmission via eBay USA, but it won't fit -> too short

He bought an AOD, because he has no OD-Switch and the typical squared AOD-Filter.
But I thought in '93 Ford changed from AOD to AOD-E - especially he has the Model that came after my '89
And the bolt pattern of his Transmission is the one of the AOD-E

Is it possible, that someone changed the valve body from AOD-E to AOD and changed the shifting gear to one without switch?
