Broken blinker switch?

On my 97 7.3l when i use the blinker (left and right) it works fine until i touch the brakes, then the blinker stays on (like a solid flash) until i let go of the brakes? And my wipers wont work unless I move the blinker *** up a little bit?the they work perfectly, but i have to hold it up a bit.
Is it the *** itself or is it something in the steering column? Thanks, Simon

Sounds like you need a multipurpose switch (multi function). There is a write up in the stickies on how to replace it, its not to bad of a job. I've done two of mine, just disconnect the batteries because its easy to short one of those small plugs.
