Bad Wire on Fuel Injection Wire Harness

I have an ugly looking wire on the fuel injection harness.
Its on the right side. Its the one that is push clamped on the flat flange attached to the metal pipe coming off the t-stat. One of the wires looked yellow.
Insulation is gone. Can the connector be replaced with a pig tail.

Can't figure out how to insert a picture

To attach a photo you need to upload the photo to a photo sharing site, then insert the image code in your post here.

Chances are pretty good the connector can be replaced with a pigtail if you can find a replacement pigtail for it. You'll want to make sure the weather seal is good on the pigtail connector. Getting the image inserted so we can make sure we're all on the same page is a good idea.

You might be able to release the terminals from the connector body and shrink sleeve them if the wire is not badly corroded. The terminals would release from the connector terminal side most likely.

Otherwise, it does not appear to be a shielded cable so you should be able to replace the pigtail connector if you're able to find one.

Is there a chance you can provide a photo of what this connects to and also clarify if your 4.0L is the SOHC or OHV engine? I took a look at the wiring diagram for the fuel injection and don't see anything similar to this, but I think you're just saying this comes out of the same harness, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the injection.

Can't figure out where it goes or comes from.
A couple more pictures.

Didn't have any Gen 2 Explorers in the shop and the Master Tech had gone home already.

Assuming the wires are still mostly good you could unplug it, start up the Explorer, and see if it sets a diagnostic code for a sensor. That might help you track down where it goes.

That's a good idea ..................
It will be a while. Waiting for a blower fan and resistor.

It is the C199 connection to the knock sensor.
The female end on the harness itself has the insulation issues.

If the issue is really just the insulation, I think I'd be trying to figure out how to get the connector apart and remove the contacts. Pay attention to which wire is in which position (although knowing it's C199 helps!) and slide some shrink sleeving (adhesive-lined would be preferred) over the exposed copper. Then reassemble the connector and you should be good to go for several more years of service.

You might want to confirm you have a source of the pigtail first though, just in case things don't go as planned trying to disassemble the connector.
