48-50 F3 Tow Truck

I first saw this truck several years ago in the middle of a sea of cars in a tow yard. The tow yard moved locations and I was there yesterday for work. The tow truck is now sitting by itself in the open. Word is that it may be restored by the tow company "sometime soon". However, when I asked if it may be for sale, I was told that the owner may consider selling it. It's an interesting truck/project, but not for me.

Reminds me of the Chevy tow truck my dad built when I was a little kid back in the mid '60s. I wouldn't mind having it. I'd clean it up, keep the tow rig but add sides and have one heck of a cool tow truck.

I think it should be kept as a tow truck. What I'm curious about is the rear wheels.

Sorta look like railroad wheels. They have the rounded center disc like the railroad used and appear to be 19.5" tubeless. Stu

That's a really unusual oil pan, do you know which 6-banger it has? (226 or 254)

I have no idea what a 254 oil pan looks like, but that one looks like my 226.

254 pans are the same upper but have a T sump. Not the best pics, but i think you can get the idea.

I didn't want to open the hood or peek in the glovebox. I thought I saw dual exhaust so I figured it was a 239 V8.

Appears to be a homade wrecker body and the winch looks a lot like a model T differential.....

Yeah, it certainly looks a lot more like 'creative engineering' than something that came from the boys at Holmes.

If I was to find one of these, it would make the decision as to what to do with my coe a lot easier. (Or harder as the case may be, lol)

If you found one like that I'd have to arm wrestle you for it. Was gonna put my ford script 9' stakebed on my current 2 ton project, but it just looks kind of light for the truck that it is. I have been ogling wrecker bodies, maybe with a gas powered welder alongside the winch.... The home-built is cool, but the pictured one is way cooler.
