I also removed the rag joint cup from the front.

I converted my 2wd to 4wd and did not have to change columns, but I cant remember if I had to alter the shaft to hook it up.

Not the same!
1976/79 4WD's have a one piece lower steering shaft & coupler assy (3B676 in pic) that's located below the steering shaft (3524) that no 2WD has.

2WD's have a one piece steering shaft with flange.

1974 2WD's use a different rag joint (3A525) than 1976/79 4WD's. 1976/79 4WD's with M/S use a different rag joint than with P/S.

Do these columns look the same? Left: 1976/77 F100/150 4WD with 4 speed / Right: 1973/77 F100/250 2WD & F350 with 4 speed.

You couldn't take off 3524 and put the straight bar on it?

Is part # 3524 the same for both? I know I didn't do any major alterations or I would have remembered.

No. You have a 1966 F250 2WD that's been converted to 4WD. OP has a 1977 F150 4WD

Look at the parts catalog pics.

2WD: 3524 is a one piece steering shaft with flange. Routes from steering wheel to bottom of column. Rag joint bolts to flange, then connects to input shaft of steering box.

1976/79 4WD: 3524 steering shaft routes from steering wheel to 3B676 one piece lower steering shaft and coupler assy that has a flange on it. Rag joint attaches to flange then to input shaft of steering box.

the 66 is my parts truck, I was talking about the 65 I drive, it was a 2wd manual steering, I put a 79 4x4 chassis under it with power steering, and I don't think I had to modify much to do it. If it was a big production I would have remembered. I can take a look at it when the weather gets a little better. And tell you exactly what I did. but I'm guessing I just removed the flat flange and adapted it to the 4wd shaft. It still has the 65 column.

OK I braved the eliments and took a peak, the u-joint from the 79 4x4 fit on the old 2wd shaft, I put a grade 8 bolt threw it, so it more than likely doesn't have a key, and the lower shaft between the ujoint and the ragjoint telescopes so if the length was a little different it didn't matter.

There is no u-joint on 1976/79 4WD steering columns. The lower steering shaft and coupler is a one piece assembly, no parts were replaceable.

1966 F100 4WD, 1967/75 F100/250 4WD's have a multi-piece lower steering shaft and coupler that includes a replaceable u-joint.

These trucks do not have a rag joint, the coupler connects to the input shaft of the steering gearbox with a clamp and thru bolt.

the illistration you posted #24 showes the ujoint and rag joint shaft that my 79 chassis has. Mine is identical to that illistration.
