78 f150 351m swap to 77 460
Hey everybody I'm a newbie to the site and also to working on these old ford trucks. I got a good deal on a 78 f150 ranger xlt 4x4 351m and also a 77 f250 camper special 460.
Now I would like to try and attempt the motor swap and was hoping to get some info on what parts I should swap over to the f150 with the 460 engine?
Will I need to buy the motor mounts or can I swap them from truck to truck?
And will I be able to keep the harnesses in the trucks and just swap engines or do I need to swap the harnesses too?
Any tips or info on how to do this swap properly would be highly appreciated! Thanks
Matt

While i cant answer this, i can tell you that you need to provide more info..........first off, are they both A/T or both manual tranny trucks? 2wd trucks use a front sump oil pan, 4x4's use a rear sump. Take a look at the warranty plates on eack truck, look at a VIN decoder, or better still ask for Numberdummy or another member who has all the plate data, and see if both trucks are original motors, transmission, etc.

why not re-use the 460's harness? I wuld think that you could use the 351's harness with the 460 though. Im tryin to think of what's all included in that harness. I think all thats in there is the wires for the distributor, the one wire for that stupid solenoid on the side of the carb, and a wire to the AC compressor if you have one. I think the battery/alternator harnesses and the ignition module harnesses are their own separate pieces.

I swapped an 83 460 into my 78 which had a 351m and I used the harness that came on my 460. If you didn't know this already you should purchase some adapter motor mounts off of Broncograveyard.com they make mounts specifically for this swap and they work perfectly. They run about a hundred bucks (or they did when I bought them). Also you do need a rear sump on the 460

The harness from the 460 has some melted wires and will have to be completely gone through. If the 351m harness wont work for it I'll probably end up buying a new one from Painless Performance.
I wanted to swap brake boosters from the 77 f250 with cruise control to the 78 f150 without it. Is that possible or do I need to have cruise control to be able to use it?
