Retractable block heater cord

So I think its quite a hassle to deal with extension cords in the freezing weather. How nice would it be to have that cord as a retractable extension so that when you come up to a location you want to plug your truck in, you just pull the cord and its done.
Has anyone figured out this mod yet?

You might could switch your cord out with one of those coily cords, but I doubt if you could create enough room to install some kind of a retractable reel on the truck to make this a possibility. Nice thought, though, and perhaps it really is possible.

I found something called Arctic Leash. Over 200 bucks.
Only thing I can think of right now is buy an outdoor rated retractable cord, cut and swap the ends. Would probably have room to stuff it all inside the engine compartment.
Or, reroute it all to the back inside and find a way to route the cord from inside the cab to the exterior but still allow for the retraction to work.

Hmm.ideas and ideas.

It is a good idea but the weather and salt might tear it up pretty quick. Would need to be 14 gauge minimum- for a longer run. Let us know what you come up with. Might check boating supply store. They may have some specialty cords available.Good Luck.

Where you going to plug in besides home? Mount the cord reel inside your garage, shed, whatever and put the end through a rubber seal (piece of inner tubs, etc) and punch a hole in the wall. When you pull up, pull the cord and plug in. Several people in this neck of the woods have done just this.

No offense taken Gerry..

It just looked easier to fit on the truck and it's cheaper in price...

That will solve your problem...
I used to ignore cold start/block heater threads. Now I'm making plans to move north & I'm paying more attention.
I like the idea of a retractable cord & it makes me think of the garage units that mount on a ceiling etc. But the cord prob isn't rated for what our block heaters pull? My first thought would be to run the block heater cord to the bed and mount a retractable cord there.
