Standard or HD 6.9L?

I'm looking up some parts I need on car-part.com, and for the air cleaner, there's an option for Standard or HD. How do I know which my truck is? Any ideas as to how the air box could be different between the two, is the diameter of the intake different? Thanks.

I don't think there is a difference. I have never heard of those options for a 6.9.

Me neither. I think I've heard of a difference in the cooling system that might make a truck HD. The HD air cleaner is selling for like $50 while the standard one is around $85. Sellers have put notes in for parts saying "check if HD or standard". I just don't see how/why they would have different air cleaners either way, unless there was something in the engine bay that would keep a larger part from being put in.

Standard or Heavy Duty Filter

I think they are referring to the filter and not the engine. Just a hunch.

The HD filter would be for the industrial 6.9/7.3 in the IH S-series trucks, they are twice the size of ours in our trucks.

Closing the loop on this one. The air box that I received, described as "HD" by the JY, seems to be nearly identical to my stock one. Old one on the right, new one on the left.

I think I remember seeing this tube that's on the new one on a 7.3L air box. Still fits for my 6.9L

Covers are slightly different. I had to take out this cylinder insert on the new one to get it to fit.

In the truck:

I would definitely replace your hood cowl seal as well. It's the reason why your old air cleaner bowl is rusty like that, and has water on the cover.

We had a member or 2 on here let their truck sit a while, and water got down inside the intake from the long bolt that holds down the cover, and seize their engine....

Hd was an option you could choose when ordering a new pickup it included dual tanks, larger radiator(called super cooling Package), heaver suspension, and brakes I am not sure what else it applied mostly to gas trucks because that all came standard when you ordered the diesel package.

The air cleaner on our 84 IH is alot bigger than the two you have pictured. The filter is roughly 2" bigger and about 4" taller.

Thanks, I'll make sure to get a new seal. I have it covered now so it's not that much of an issue, and hope to swap the cab in the next 6 months.

Luckily water didn't get into the intake, and the mice that got into the air box (and every other cavity in the truck) when the truck sat didn't get anything into the intake. The fact that this truck runs after sitting for 10 years is pretty remarkable.

I'm guessing hd is the filter with foam wrap. Non hd no foam wrap. Just a thought.
