Need help transmission

Hey guys, haven't been on here in awhile... BUT the truck is RUNNING!!!!

I have been driving it a little and what a blast...
BUT I NEED HELP.

There is a very loud 'clunking/clanging' noise coming from.?????
One mechanic said 'the rear end, sound is coming up the driveshaft'...
Another friend said... 'no way that's coming from the rear end.. sounds like it's coming from the bell housing somewhere'...???

I THINK it's coming from the transmission.
Mainly hear it in 2nd gear, or when coming off the throttle in 3rd... goes away in third when there is a 'load' on it?

Is pretty consistent in 2nd, but not always.
Stock 3 speed on the column... 1953 F100

Any ideas? I've had the trans gone over, twice, because of this noise.

Anyone have a transmission they swapped out and would be willing to part with?
I'll post pictures this evening.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Join the TN group. There are lots of members in that area, some of whom would tell you where the noise is originating. I think some of them get together once in awhile,, probably like nothing better than to troubleshoot a noisy driveline.
What do you mean, transmission gone over twice. What was done? Disassembled, inspected, rebuilt or a rag run over the outside? If it has been rebuilt twice, I seriously doubt if it is a transmission problem. One very noisy rear end I once heard was the ring gear bolts worn and about to shear. When going from pull to coast, it made a pretty good noise. Of course, I guess the U joints have been checked?

Are there any vibrations associated with this noise?

my 53 had a clunking noise under load also . it had the light duty 3 speed , probably the same as yours . mine was in first though . it had a bad synchro on that gear . i swapped it for the heavy four speed , but my cuz who worked at all trans for years said it was an easy fix as long as the gears etc. weren't chipped or damaged , and the parts are readily available .

I had the trans 're-built' years ago when I tore everything apart. New seals etc.
Then when I drove it initially, we pulled it again and opened up trying to find the noise...

If it were the rear, why would it be primarily in 2nd gear?

I'm stumped, so I don't know if my questions even make sense.

Did you replace the bearings in the trans?

"tore everything apart"... my experience is trans make a lot more noise than a simple occasional clunk, check the drivetrain - leave a U joint loose, got a U joint going out, etc - just a thought, but quick and easy to check everything over once.
