Whine at a certain speed, anyone else?
Hi everyone,
Over the last month my truck has developed a noticeable whine when under throttle between 50-55 MPH. I believe the ring and pinion weren't set right from the factory causing abnormal wear, but of course that's just an educated guess. It's definitely coming from the back of the truck, and only when under throttle. It seems to be getting louder, and it's noticeable over the radio.
Has anyone else seen or heard of anything like this in a newer F150? I remember the article someone(Was it Robb?) posted about how the factory was now using some fancy camera technology to match ring and pinion gears. Perhaps mine didn't get that treatment?

I have a 2012 and had the problem at 60 mph. Very slight whine under acceleration at 60, and a lot louder decelerating back down through 60 mph. (only 3000 miles on truck)
Dealer replaced ring and pinion. This truck still had a 8.8 diff.
Yours may have the 9.xx
It was my understanding from Dealer, that Ford said replace and not adjust.
It seems to be doing OK now at 4500 miles.
It is interesting to me that the whine was worse when the diff got good and warm,
but uses 75w/145 synthetic, which should be thicker when warm.

Interesting, thanks for posting. Mine makes no noise at all unless I'm on the throttle for some reason. Mine has the 9.75" rear axle, and I've always thought these things are bullet proof. I waited the requisite 1,000 miles before towing, and probably 10% of my first 10,000 miles were towing. Which engine do you have?
We'll see...I was going to wait until I went to the dealer next to get this looked at, but it seems to be getting louder.

My 2004 Expy has the LS 3.73 axle with 9.75" diff and with only 800 miles on the clock, she started making noise and then started vibrating like a grinding vibration when going around corners. The entire rear end was replaced and 97K miles later, no issues.

Thanks guys.
When I was searching around I couldn't find any other issues like this, and I was curious to see if anyone else had this happen. I'm getting no vibration whatsoever, just a loud whining noise; it almost seems like differential issues can come with a wide variety of symptoms! I'm gonna schedule a service appointment soon, and we will see what they say.

you can get them with a warranty !??!?!?
man ... i got screwed!!!
could be a gear-set issue, anything is possible ... i wonder if a rear wheel bearing isn't more likely, though. Might be hard to tell one from the other while driving.
just a thought.
keep us updated.
(really i just wanted to make the warranty comment, but the paper work to write myself up for off topic drivel is too much work, so i thought i'd throw in something that sounded half-way relevant.)

Huh. I don't remember seeing an 8.8" under any of the newer F150s, but I don't know how many 3.7L trucks there are out there. The 9.75" and 8.8" axles are completely different.
This is an 8.8:
And this is a 9.75:
By the way how do you like the V6? I had a 2003 4.2L truck and really didn't like it, but that antiquated pushrod mill bears no resemblance to your 3.7L. I've never driven one of the new 3.7L trucks, but I would imagine it would move a crew cab around pretty well. You have more power than the previous generation 5.4L V8!

So far, I am very satisfied. I just got rid of my 2003 7.3 and fifth wheel, and bought this one.
I loved the Diesel, but just didn't want to make it a daily driver. 1 or 2 miles a trip.
Wasn't going to trailer anymore, so I bought this little truck.
Now we are thinking about a small Fun Finder, or similar.
The only thing, that I find annoying, is getting in and out of the truck.
If I don't use the step bars, and just get up into the seat, my head rubs the sun visor. I am only 6'1 and 230#.
It seems like an OK truck.
I used to have a 97 4.6, that was an awesome engine. 185,000 miles and nothing done to it. Well wires and spark plugs.
The 3.7 seems a lot more powerful than it was.
