Wavering fuel gauge and shut down

I recently bought a '92 7.3 F350 dually. It had tons of deferred maintenance and I've done nearly all of it. The one remaining problem seems to be that whenever I get under half a tank, front or rear, the fuel gauge wanders back and forth. No problem, but then the engine shuts off. After a few seconds of hard cranking the engine restarts.... does this repeatedly. Once the tanks are full, the problem disappears. Any thoughts?

Your fuel pick-up foot may have fallen off... it's not uncommon. I have a Hutch mod link in my signature, click that and it will show you how to correct the flaws in the fuel system.

If it is in fact a 1992 F350 I'm sure the guys over in that section may be able to help you out more. Most guys here still know what there talking about though.
