Throwout Bearing Fit

just got a bunch of parts in the mail yesterday and headed down to the barn to check the fit of everything so that i'm all ready to go with the zf install this coming weekend.

everything matched up with the parts they will replace (carrier bearing, pilot bearing, u-joints, etc), but I did not have an old part to compare the throw-out (or more properly, clutch release) bearing to.

I think its the right one, but can someone check me on it? it definitely DOES NOT fit tight to the trans input shaft, but i'm guessing that's by design to allow for positional play in the clutch fork. and I assume that there is (or should be) always pressure from the fork to the pressure plate spring fingers to keep it from flopping all around.

in the pics below you can see that there's probably a half-inch of play between the input shaft (a spare one I had laying around) and the ID of the throwout bearing. I think I have it all oriented right, but can someone please confirm that this play is normal?

thanks!

orientation of clutch fork on TO-bearing on input shaft - correct?

There is a quill that the throw out bearing rides on, on the front of the transmission. The input shaft lives inside the quill. From the pics, it looks like you have the right TO bearing.

aaaahh, I see - the wife was on me to get back to the house for dinner, so I just grabbed the loose input shaft for test fit instead of getting the trans down off the storage rack.

what your describing, makes sense, though, Tom. thanks for the input and good enough for me, for now!
