97 F150 transmission issues

97 4.6 v8 transmission want "kick
down" when accelerating. When you
floor in first its fine until around
3000 rpm then nothing through to
4000, then shifts into 2nd. The truck
doesnt slow, just wont go any faster.
In other gears it does nothing, you
can feel it shift but it just does
nothing. It was serviced Saturday
and nothing improved. The fluid was
clean and not much was on the
magnet. When I filled it back up I
put 10 quarts of fluid back in, and
says that its over filled. When I
bought the truck it was over filled,
but I didnt think much of it, I just
drained it to operating level, which
was about 2 quarts I took out. Any
help would be appreciated.

Think you better try this again.
What is the meaning of 'kick down' when accelerating?
There is no such thing.
Can't make heads or tails of what your trying to say.
.
Wide open acceleration won't shift the trans until a certain speed is reached that the computer will upshift the transmission when in the D position.
.
We understand the overfill but the rest is making no sense until you clear it up.
Good luck.

Kick down, referring to the passing gear. In first gear it will shift to second around 30 mph, unless you have the throttle wide open it will stop accelerating around 40 but the rpms will continue to climb until it reaches 4000 rpm and will then shift into second. When cruising its fine shifting into gears but wont shift into the passing gear in any gear, and makes it difficult getting up to 70 mph, unless Im on a completly flat surface. I know I added more information, but I hope that helped to clear things up a bit.

Best I can make out from what your saying is the trans is slipping.
The motor is trying to shift the trans normally but it may be worn.
Check for transmission codes to see if it's electrical.
There is no passing gear per sey but just a downshift.
In these systems of electric control it's the TPS sensor position and road speed that determine the 'forced' down shifts from a higher gear.
There are no rods or special trans kickdown mechanics, otherwise.
Good luck.

It has me stumbed, Im use to 80s and older. This is the newest vehicle Ive had. I pulled the codes and the only ones I have are banks 1 and 2 are lean. The overdrive light isnt flashing for transmission issues. Would the codes be found with the OBD2? It drives fine in all gears, but why would it slip when i try to pass someone, or accelerate?

If you have codes set you need to repair for them before passing judgment on other things your not sure about because they may be affecting.
It's not like you old truck.
What are the codes and do you understand what they mean?
Good luck.

The codes are 0171 and 0174 a vacuum leak. I fixed the transmission issue, the TPS was bad. I broke out my multimeter and tested it. Off by about a volt to two volts. Replaced and worked fine. I also hunted down the vacuum and fixed it too, cleared the codes and they have yet to pop back up. Once you had told me that it doesnt have a kick down, or detent cable, but ran fine in all gears I knew it had to be something electrical, so I began to probing. Thanks for the help.

Good for you.
The TPS has a lot to do with when the trans shifts.
Best of luck.
