humming sound when key is in ignition
I've noticed that when I insert the key in my 2013 F250 I hear a humming noise, if I pull the key out it goes away. What is this noise? It seems to do it as long as the key is in, but is quiet enough that you can only hear it when there isn't a lot of back round noise.

[QUOTE=sledjunk;13478795]Maybe it doesn't know the words?
. I think it times out eventually, too

I just noticed it the other day and it has been too hot in the garage to wait and see if it times out and the sound is faint enough that I don't know if I would hear it outside with all the other noises. When it cools down I'm going to wait and see what happens.

You can always bring this up at your dealership the next time you're in for a maintenance appointment; I'm sure your service manager will be able to provide some insight. Once you hear back, let us all know what the verdict was.

I know this is an old thread but I finally dropped my truck off at the dealership today to have them check the noise out since it started making the sound after I shut the truck off and removed the key. I had to reinsert the key and then pull it back out to make the sound stop. The mechanic heard the noise said there shouldn't be anything in the transmission that makes noise with just the key in the ignition. I have an appointment scheduled for Thurs and they are going to drop the pan and check the wiring out. I'll update when I hear back form them.

I agree, there are way too many chimes on these new trucks. I know when my seatbelt isn't on, when the door is open, lights are on, etc..

Mystery partially solved
Hey guys, my 2014 Super Duty 6.2L does the same thing as well but sounds like it is coming from the intake area. My dealer has no idea what it is but I assume it is normal. My owners manual states that leaving the key in the ignition with the truck off will discharge the battery. It just doesn't explain why.

Whine with key in ignition
Noticed the high-pitched hum with the key in the ignition when I first picked up my truck. Asked one of the Service Techs at the dealer, and he said that all Ford trucks do it.
He thought it had something to do with Anti-theft system. The truck interrogates the key for the correct code, and if it checks out, the system pulls in some sort of a relay that allows the starter circuits to work. The whine is from anti-theft being satisfied that it has the proper key and the starter system being energized.
RWNJ.
