I won't be able to see my trusted mechanic until next week (after my classes end). This knock started two days ago with no warning or other sounds leading into it. It began on a hot Texas day in which I had to drive around the city for a few hours. I noticed the sound when I got home and it doesn't seem to have gotten worse. Seems like it is louder when just idling though. Here is the audio I recorded of me idling in the driveway after it had warmed up a bit (bit of wind in beginning of audio, sorry about that). I revved the engine to 3000 RPM at around the 40 second mark and then let it come back down to idle again.



Any help diagnosing this problem would make me a very grateful person. I have to drive this vehicle to my mechanic that lives about 2 hours away from here. All of the mechanics I've tried around here have tried to screw me over at least once. I want to make sure I don't ruin the vehicle with that drive to my beloved mechanic. The performance doesn't seem to be affected by this knocking sound. I'm sure he will be able to fix my problems, I'm just trying to see if I can do something temporarily until then (next week) or get a better idea of what's going wrong.

Quite possible one of the cam phasers. Can you tell whereabouts the noise is coming from on the engine? Top, bottom, front, rear, passenger side, driver side, etc?

 

Thanks for the response. It's definitely louder on the passenger side of the engine. It also seems louder when I stick my head under the engine on the passenger side (but it's still quite audible on the top as well).
