Water in fuel message

During a heavy rain the "water in fuel, drain filter" warning came on. I drained the filter like suggested and a water bottle full of water drained out. This is less then a week after I had the titan fuel tank installed. After I drained the fluid I restarted the engin and "reduce power an water in fuel" warning came on. I am 250 miles from the nearest ford dealer. Any suggestions?? How major is this???

Is there a chance this could be a bad sensor?? This all happened after a heavy rain. When I went to drained it only had diesel can out.

You are in a bad situation. If you tow to ford dealer. It will be documented you have water in fuel. The tank needs 2 be pulled drained completly, and the o ring is either installed incorrect or who ever put it in did not torque it properly. Need to flush fuel system. A independent shop would not document this. And they can clear codes and you should be okay.

When the tank was installed did you fill it right up to the filler neck with fuel? Best way to test for leaks since the sending unit connection is located below the high fill point on the tank. If it leaked at that point it is very likely the seal at the sending unit on top of the tank. If you didn't install it, take it to whoever did and get them to do as mentioned above. Pull it and drain it and find make sure it is installed properly. Also check connections for filler and vents and make sure they aren't kinked or not tight.

If your vents aren't installed properly you could literally be building up a lot of additional vacuum that could draw water into your fuel tank in extremely wet driving conditions.

So after I looked at the diesel in a cup It did not look like I had any water in it from the begging to test my theory I decided to add water to the diesel I drained in the cup and could see the difference. I am 300 miles from the ford dealership that installed the tank. Like I said we went through a lot of heavy rain and some big *** puddles
Is there anything else that can cause this message with out water actually being in the tank?

The codes need to be cleared. you might try disconnecting both batts for a littlle and see if that helps. if not limp to a o-reillies or a parts store most have a code checker and can clear codes and try again. but you have a problem. and if a ford dealer installed it and screwed it up. they need to not only fix it correctlly but give you something incase you have problems with and i hate even mention this but the HPFP.As any failure with rust, warranty will be refused.and the dealer is at fault for not doing tank install correctly.

Seems like the Titan tank causes alot of problems. Maybe they should redesign the top of the tank to not have a recessed area that will hold water??

I thought that it was full of water it turned out it wasn't. I looked under the bottom more closely this morning and notice a wire that looks like its suppose to connect to the filter. is that suppose to connect? The light is off now. the wire which is all black with a grey connect piece is still taped up to the new tank from when they put in the tank. If that us suppose to connect would've that shorted out from when I went through the rain and the water?

The top of the tank where the sending unit drops in is lower but not recessed to hold water. Water runs right off. The high fuel point is above the level of the sending unit. These tanks are well designed and are easy to test for leaks.

Yes that grey connector is supposed to be connected to the filter housing. This is the second report that someone who was working on a Super Duty truck and forgot to install this connector and the truck reported a false water in fuel during a rain shower that probably shorted the signal by leaving the connector uninstalled.

Keep on truckin...

I had the WIF message come on a few months ago when I was driving through some water, 4 inches or so. Apparently water got on my sensor from the outside in. I put some dielectric grease on the sensor and cleared the codes. No problems since.
