94 7.3 turbo idi won't start

Hey everyone, I've been patroling the forums for a while trying to figure out what's going on with my recently purchased 1994 F350 7.3L turbo IDI motor. I bought the truck not running because I was told it was out of time from when they replaced the headgasket. When we pulled the truck home we broke it all down and it was not out of time, so after researching on here we pulled the injectors and thought the IP was bad. Went out purchased a new IP and no fuel came out. Did some more digging and decided to wire all the plugs from the IP off the battery to bypass the FSS and things. When doing this we got a good stream of gas from all 8 of the injectors and bleed them all. After doing that still not turning over. Read a little more and checked the glow plug relay, it had no power, so we replaced it and it's showing the GPs are all getting power. The wait to start light comes on for about 5 -10 seconds them goes off and you can hear the glow plug relay clicking. We've cranked and cranked and cranked but it still wont fire, so much over the last 4 weeks we've burnt up the starter. If there is anything else you guys can think of, it would be much appreciated. In the mean time I'm going to replace the starter haha.

Thanks,
Gregory

That's actually how we have it. It has an after market fuel pump mounted on the side so we linked in right at it with a 5 gallon tank. It's getting the fuel, we have a clear fuel line going into the IP so we can see the fuel going in. Plus we've uncapped all then injectors to ensure there's no air in the lines and fuel comes out. That's what I'm not getting, it has fuel and now the glow plugs have power and all its does is crank.

Are you getting white smoke from the tailpipe while cranking?

Also make sure your batteries are testing good. These trucks need a good bit of power to crank over faster enough to start. I bought a 92 that needed a engine. After putting the engine in it took 5 cranks to start with a mechanical lift pump. Batteries were fully charged and battery charger on 140amp start.

Well we are getting exhaust out of the tailpipe however there's not really a color to it, though we are getting white smoke from the blow by. And both batteries are on a booster set to charge and when we got to turn the motor over we set it to start. We have a gauge on the line before the IP and it's reading about 11 psi.

when in doubt try a shot of ether. Make sure the GPs are disconnected. Mine was a bearcat to get started the first time after it was sitting. Had fuel, was cranking good etc etc... just would not start. Finally after pouring a gas / diesel mixture down the intake and a very liberal amount of ether it fired off. Started great ever since.

Is the truck auto or manual? If its manual try pull starting it.

Yes the fuel filter has been bypassed so it's running strains from the 5 gallon bucket to the lines that run to the injector pump. Also we have tried a couple shots of ether as well thinking it would help get it going because the previous owner had said it hadn't been started in about six months. It kind of act like it wants to start for a fraction of a second but never turns over. The truck is an automatic so we can't pull start it.

If your having that much of an issue and its just not going over, give it a GOOD shot of ether....sometimes that can tell you whats wrong. If it fires off, I would investigate air intrusion. You bled the injector lines but it will run them dry again if your lines are shot.

If you aren't getting white smoke from the tailpipe (vaporized fuel), you are not getting fuel injected into the cylinders. That could be caused by a bad injection pump or air in the system.

I'd use ether. You should probably do as others recommend, disable the glow plugs when using it, but ether will definitely help - it'll get it moving fast enough to run, even 5+ degrees out of time.

Well last night I gave it a generous amount of ether and still nothing. It sounds like for a split second it is going to turn over but nothing.
