buddy looking at buying an 08 f550... concerns...

Hidey ho there 6.4 guys...

This is my first post in this section. I typically hang out in the 99-03 7.3 area... but a buddy called me up talking about maybe buyig this 08 with 60k on the clock...

The concerns:

Was told it got water in the oil...

That to me immediately says oil cooler...

He says it spins over but... not evenly.. has me thinking hydrolock imminent?

I got zilcho experience with the 6.4 other than i know it has 2 turbochargers... and you basically gotta remove the cab to work on it?

From the description i got from him... listed above in its entirety... is this truck a possible winner? Or pass on it and find a 7.3? Those I know how to work on lol...

This truck will live the rest of its life as a junkyard tow truck if my buddy buys it.

water in the oil is either a front cover or egr coolers usually. For this to be a junk yard truck he would need to do a dpf delete. Probably not the best for him in this case..usually junk yard stuff never sees the road again, unless he is going to get cars from private sellers?

So to update...
Everybody else who he talked to in the know also told him to pass on it unless he got it stupid cheap...

He got it stupid cheap...

He drug it home to its new shop and stuck a charger on it so he could roll up the windows...

Thinking the motor was done anyway... he gave the starter a bump... just a bump...

It fired right up!

Said there arent any fluids in it... radiator and oil seem to have been drained...

Im going to plug into it with ae here in an hour or so and see if anything pops up.
Anything in particular i should data log if it runs?

I will probably start a new thread with the findings... to maybe make it more easily searchable?

interesting...be sure there is some lube in it before starting...oil presssure/fuel pressure reading are important right away. Injectors and cylinder contribution too.

So... my buddy...
Did not pay 10k for it...

He payed 6500!

P.O. was told by the guys at Ford... that it needs a new motor...

This is what ae said koeo...

He is going to throw some cheap oil in it for testing...
Must it be "cj-4" or is 15w-40 delo ok?

My thoughts are to leave the cooling system dry until we figure out for sure if its the egr cooler or timing cover issue?

Definitely needs a new fuel filter from looking at ae...

Beyond that im not to sure what im looking at.. this new stuff is still foreign to me but ill soak it in...

Need to get a 6.4 pc/ed book...

No coolant will keep it in reduced power. I would put some in it.

Just do the Dino CJ 4 oil by Motorcraft. That is what I run anyway.

Ignore the U codes.

May need a new DPF or needs to regen. You will know once you get some fluid in it.

The cylinder 1 is a problem..could be a bad injector as well.

Buzz test came back clean...
My guess is stored code from hydrolock... mayhap it started getting water in #1 and popped the cyl imbalance ?

Any links to egr/cooler writeups?

Will do more testing tomorrow when he has oil in it and do cct and look at rotational velocity and see about that cyl 1 issue.

The clogged map screams egr cooler to me after dealing with it on a 6.0
The map port on the manifold was completely blocked... all up in the tubing... cleaned it out and it was like a brand new truck.

Im still not convinced for certain it was hydrolocked... the way he describes it... it just had some weak batts... makes it sound like it was turning over but just real sluggish... will see when i go to start it up.

There is plenty of moisture at the tailpipe... oily watery stuff...
Oil was in the pan... looked like it had been in there for 10k miles... burnt and thin.
Drained out at least 3 gallons... but nothing was reading on the stick...

Whats the capacity?

capcity is 15 qtrs. Check the dipstick and the tube to ensure it is all the way in.

It will look dirty within a few hundred miles. That would be normal.

Weak batterires will do alot of wierd things. Check brakes is another one..yet there is nothing wrong with the brakes.

It is weak batteries..so test and charge.
