Replacing Starter on 390

Any tricks on replacing the starter on a 1972 390? There are 3 bolts from what I can see. Two look easy, the last upper bolt looks hard. Any tricks would be greatly appreciated.

No tricks, I use a long extension with my ratchet.

If you think you want to do headers down the road eventually, perhaps consider using a small aftermarket starter, makes like a lot easier when installing the header on that side

lol. i just replaced mine. 76 truck with headers. with the wheels turned left, i used a regular old wrench and sat on the ground behind the wheel i just reached in there and did it without even poppin the hood. but with the headers i had to take the header loose to get it all the way out thru the bottom. a 1/4" drive ratchet with deep socket and a good 8" extension(or 2 or 3 short extensions) will also get the upper-most bolt too. a long time ago i replaced my starter bolts with stainless steel hardware and have never had issues being difficult.

i personally have found that it really helps if you run the top bolt in from the backside of the bellhousing and use it like a stud it makes mounting the starter a breeze and then all you have to do is stick the lil 1/2 inch nut in your socket and about 8" extension like 7636074460 said but that is just my personal preference i find it easier to put nuts on things instead of blindly stabbing

+1 Though I usually run the middle bolt as a stud and put the top bolt in first, because it's tough to start and I often drop it, then it falls behind the starter and I've got to yank the whole thing off to get to it.
