I'm about ready to install a factory turbo set up on my 89 and was wondering if I have to relocate the relay and controller? I know it will be hard to get to but haven't had much trouble with it in the first place. I have access to the valve cover from the turbo motor but no harness. Also where can I get new valve cover gaskets?
I'm about to do the same thing, and I was just told that yes you do need to relocate. Apparently the heat soak from the turbo will cook the controller sooner or later.
Rock Auto might have valve cover gaskets, or you could probably use RTV.
I put an ATS-093 on my old truck ('93 F350), and the controller wasn't relocated. It cooked. I highly recommend getting that valve cover & relocating it. You should be able to re-work the harness to work...
When I installed a rebuilt drop in motor in the 90, I upgraded to the turboed motor. The GPR was in the same spot as the NA's motor. It's been there for 100k miles, and just had to replace the relay on the controler.
