Run down the road, after you hit about 4500 RPM you will probably notice a loss of power anyway. No reason to go past 5500 on a stock engine.

No disrespect, but you have a truck. Drive it like a truck. If you want a hot rod get a hot rod. If you take care of a 302 it will outlive cockroaches. I had a uncle with a 302 in a 86 half ton have 342xxx with one valve job and well taken care of before my cousin wrapped it around a tree.

Now I have a 302 in my 3/4 ton and it is far from fast but it pulls more weight than it should and will do anything I ask it too. And to answer your question 5500 is the max I would rev it but I rarely see over 3k on mine

I agree with fordmanva... it's a truck, and should be driven like a truck. Trucks are high-torque/low-rpm vehicles designed for moving heavy weights, and one shouldn't try to drive it like it's a Camaro or Mustang or Ricer.

i know a truck should be driven like a truck, hence the name "truck." by the way, i have a camaro to hot rod around in, but i need to know the max rpm so i know how far it will go before it blows, i dont plan on pushing it that far. i needed to know my threshold. plus i need to buy a tachometer for my truck and needed to know my range.

I realize that this conversation is centered around a 302 engine, so this is just for humor...

I have a 1985 with 4.9L engine and normally drive like an old grandpa, BUT this morning on the way to work, I felt "froggy" and wound it to 3000 RPMs and the engine wispered to me, "why did you do that?"

Based on peak power, you need not go over 4000, 4500 tops.

What you are missing is your engine condition and mileage. There is a reason high end racers rebuild after each race. Parts wear, tolerances grow, problems push tword the surface. You may be able to wind out a 500 to 80,000 mile engine to 5500. But as miles grow id definately cut that number. I completely understand your question and why you want to know but just like being a 20yr old then aging to 50. There are things your not as good at, not as fast, not as strong, not as much endurance. Just keep that in mind.

REDLINE FOR A GOOD TIME!

In all seriousness though, no need to go much over 4500-5k on a stock engine.....even with loud pipes
