Time To Upgrade Exhaust

My truck is a e99 7.3 with 2WD and auto trans. I have Cold Air Intake, Gauges, 6.0 cooler... DP Tuner with tow tunes is on the way. I want to upgrade my exhaust but have some questions. The e99 has smaller up pipes and I was wondering the benifit of adding 4" or 5" after market exhaust without changing the up pipes?

I will probably remove but keep the cat just incase I have to put it back on...

Any thought?

I have a 02 and was looking at doing the same..Talking to buddies of mine, they suggest 4" with exhaust...I was thinking of going with no exhaust, but they said when towing I would get a drone sound. So I will be going with exhaust.
Hope this helps

Full 4" turbo back. Pick whichever one you want they all do the same thing only differences are the sound depending on the muffler. I scored mine off CL for $200 stainless no muffler no cat and I love it!

EDIT: there's a thread floating around here somewhere about the 4" exhaust. I'm on my phone and can't look it up. It's a long thread with a lot of great information in it.

Wish I could offer more but do keep some kind of muffler, or it will drone.
Which might not bug you but it did me.

The e99 trucks have smaller up pipes than the later years?

A lot of good comes from a debate:
  • Everybody is exposed to multiple points of view
  • More information is dug up
  • Popcorn is a fun food

You beat me to it.

Nope. They're the same diameter as the rest of the 95-03 7.3L pipes (2 inches).....just a little shorter than the later ones.

I have all three sitting in my shop if anybody needs a picture.

Yup, I found that out the hard way when I picked up all the donuts and a new babys back when I was going to do them up in Utah, over New Years. (That didn't happen.) I was at my mechanics when they were doing up pipes on a 2000 F450. They needed a new collector and I gave them the one I had in my truck, (since I had ordered it for a 2000 Ex and they are the same size from late 99 on.) The parts guy at Berge Ford messed up and gave me the wrong one, it is not even close they are almost a half inch from the bolts even matching up for the flanges, the up pipes are a different diameter too.

The pipe itself is NOT smaller diameter (as the OP believes...or read on the interwebz somewhere). The flange bolt center-to-center measurement IS smaller on the E99 turbine inlet collector ("baby's butt" as some call it) at roughly 2.75" vs. 3.25" for the 99.5-03 trucks but the pipe itself is not any different otherwise being a little bit shorter than the later ones (due to the shorter turbocharger pedestal). The manifold ends are identical at about three inches center to center on all 7.3L Powerstroke engines.

Obviously, this means that the turbine inlet collector is different too; it's readily apparent just by looking at them.

Had I looked at the parts at the time I would have still not known there was a difference. I have since come to know different. When the guy changing it brought the collector and the flange in to the office, it sure looked like the holes in each were of vastly different sizes. I guess that is just an illusion.

I'll get some pictures. I have all three variants sitting 60 yards away in the shop.

I'm not calling you out on it though. Unless a guy has all of the stuff sitting right there all the time, it would be easy to miss the details.
