fuel consumption for a 239 flat head V8?

Hello from a new member with an old 1952 F3. I appreciate the site very much and welcome the valued information. The post you mentioned well I don't belive they'll be around for the long run. Ok simple question-----

Gas tank is out of truck being cleaned and coated inside so using a 21/2 gal can inside the cab as a temp. Rebuilt the carb and starts real well now as long as the battery has a full charge. The generator is on the list as next here shortly. The question is how is the fuel consumption expected to be for a 239 flat head V8? I can watch the level in the can go down just with the truck at an idel. I had the carb apart twice as the first round the float adjustment was obviousley wrong and now corrected but something still not right I believe.

Thanks,
Dennis

I think a stock f100 was supposed to get 14 mpg. One of the fellows on ford barn gets 20mpg in a 53 coupe. so how you drive it, gearing, state of fuel system. I was losing a bunch of gas to a leak. #.92 gears at speed sucked up a bunch.

Thanks as didn't know that the milage was that low. Back in the day I just assumed it was much better. The truck has 486 in the rear axle. At this time don't plan on changing anything just to get it all back sound and running as good as new.

Again Thanks,
Dennis

Appreciate the help on the thread as not up to speed on how to on the site yet. Really want to get some pictures on before long as everyone always wants to see as I myself appreciate everybodys as they do things. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

Thanks,
Dennis

HI ...my truck is all stock ..no gas gauge ..non working speedo ..and about 12 to 16 bux's a drive ..I carry a 2 gallon gas can ..in the back ..I quit worrying about milage as long as she's running well ...but ..I think I would be happy at 14 miles to the gallon ..

Lots of variables, biggest ones being optimum tune and aerodynamics. My flatty powered truck gets about 15 mpg at highway speeds.....better if i slow down (thats no fun tho).
Your 4.86 gears will limit you to about 50 mph or so, depending on how hard you want to push it.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.
