EGR Valve Replacement Help
Hello,
It looks like I may be replacing the EGR valve on my 1997 Expedition soon. It has the 5.4 liter engine. Seems my cresent wrench is just too small to fit the large b nut which attaches the tube going down to the exhaust. I was wondering if anyone knew the exact size of that nut? A larger cresent wrench would work, but it might get a bit tight for space. If I can find the correct wrench, it would work better.
Thanks!

egr valves tend to get really tight due to heat and time. Invest in a set of metric wrenches and a socket wrench. Cresent wrenches dont cut it as the nuts will round off and/or not worth the extra effort compared to metric sockets. Suggest you soak the nut the night before with PB Blaster or similar. good luck

when i posted last i didnt read your message closely and i wasnt thinking about the big EGR nut. That got my curiosity up so i went out in the drive just now to check my 97 F150 4.6. The biggest metric open ended wrench i have is a 23MM and it was too small. So i tried a 1inch, a 1 1/8th, and a 1 and 1/16th standard wrench. The 1 and 1/16th inch is a very close fit. I took my egr off for cleaning some time ago and i dont remember if i used a large crescent or the 1 1/16th. You could convert the 1 1/16th inch size to metric and see what the metric equivalent is. I would guess it is a 25MM.
sorry about last night's post. i can see why you dont want to buy a set of metrics up to the big 25MMsize.

EGR Valve Replacement
'99 4.6L Ford Expedition - any tips or suggestions on getting to the darn thing and then finding the room to loosen the nut??!! on my previous car (Explorer) the EGR Valve was in the front and easy to get to....in my Expedition its in the back and I'm having a hard time maneuvering around other hoses and pipes in order to loosen the nut. thanks
