428 Stroker On the Way

I finally got some info my 428 Stroker today. They had my money 3 weeks ago, so I was getting frustrated. In their defense, they did tell me in the beginning that this project would take about 6-8 weeks and that the custom pistons would take 4 weeks alone. But for the lest 3 weeks, they couldn't even tell me what over-bore was required or what pistons they were planning to use.

Finally, today they had the info on the block and pistons.

They have gone .020 over on a standard 428 block. They have ordered Custom Ross Forged pistons, targeting a 10.5:1 CR for use with Edelbrock Al heads.

Cast Steel Crank w/ 4.125 Stroke Crankshaft

PRO-Line/SCAT H-Beam Rods 6.700 Connecting Rod

This will outfitted with my Ed RPM intake, Ed 750 Carb, Crower Power Beast Cam (Looks about as good as any on the Desktop Dyno), MSD billet dizzy. I'm not sure about the headers yet. I may still use my slightly mangled Dynomax until I can rig up some of those cast 406/427 headers.

Anyway, Desktop Dyno shows 500 lb-feet of torque!

What do you guys think of my FE446 combo? Wonder where I can get some "FE446" Emblems :-)

That sounds awesome dude! How much deneiro? No, wait, I don't even want to know. So they provide the block? How much HP? Thats the kind of motor that makes your chest hair grow a little longer. Let us know when you find out more.

Flatlander was advertising a 428 stroker special since they had a few 428 blocks. It's not cheap, but I fely like I would end up spending as much trying to find used parts, machining them, and getting it installed and balanced. And this way, I end up with an even longer stroke than the 428 crank :-) More Torque. Not to mentio a new crank, new rods, new pistons and all the accessory parts as well.

HP peaks at 435 at 5000-5500 RPM.

The torque curve looks real nice, 471 lb-ft available at 2000 RPM. with a peak of 498 at 3500 RPM.

Should be a month or so from now. I'm working over the chassis on the 69. All new bushings and rebuilding the power steering. then the body from the 67 comes over.

At one time I was pondering the idea of bolting in a 428 crank, except there really hard to come by around here, and I'm assuming it would also need 428 CR's/pistons. Trying to by 390/428 parts from the local parts shop around here is liking pulling teeth! They just look at me all funny like "what are you doing with an FE?".

This creature I'm building uses a slightly longer stroke SCAT Crank at 4.125". It also uses a different Rod and custom pistons. So, I know what you mean.

Now I have to figure out what I'm doing for exhaust.

I'm thinking of running 11:1 CR if I can get away with it. Except I'm wondering if there'll be clearance problems. Anybody running 11:1 compression in here?

I'm not sure where you are worried about having enough clearance, you'll need to explain a little more. As for the compression, yeah you can run 11 to 1, but only if you are willing to buy racing gas or aviation fuel to do it. I have a 390 w/ a 428 crank in it, at 060 over it is about a 421 incher....it also has 11 to 1 or a little more, and it does not like 87, 89, or 93 octane fuel at all. That's why it is parked most of the time. My daily driver pickup has a 390 w/ less than 8 to 1, runs on the cheap gas just fine. DF

The clearance I'm referring to is the distance between the piston/valve. And is it required to have atleast a dual valve spring to prevent any valve float? I'm sure the valve reliefs would work though. I'm just wondering if there's any problems running 11:1 in a 390.

Flatlander Racing is building it. Price $3999 for the short block. It's not cheap, but I figured it would get almost as expensive to find decent 428 parts and get them machined and assembled and balanced.

I also pick up a slightly longer stroke than a 428..I like torque!

Add up the parts:

a decent 428 block, machined- $1500 +

a 428 crank, machined- $500 +

rods ??

custom pistons $600

all the bearings and rings $400

balance $250

It's approaching 4K and mine will have a 4.125" SCAT stroker crank.

I just didn't trust myslef, to find decent parts and get it asembled correctly.

Will see how this goes.

Oh well, it's just my wifes future earnings :-)

What's your estimated hp numbers? I would like to build something in the 500hp range to compete with my brothers 429.

I'll be running 10.5:1 with Aluminum heads. I was convinced that this was pump gas compatible. I guess the rule of thumb is that aluminum heads allow for a about a 1 point increase in CR per the same octane.

I hope this is right, I sure don't want to run any race mix in my f250 :-)

If I do come out too high on the CR, is there a thick gasket setup that will help?

what has been done to the 429 that you want to compete with. Never met a 429 that my 416 wouldn't chew up.

I see no problem with running 10.5:1 on pump gas with the edel heads if your pistons are zero deck. With a big enough cam 11:1 is probably doable but that is getting into bigtime guess work.

800cfm holley double pumper, Weiand stealth high rise intake, ~.570cam, 11:1cr, and headers. He has it in a 73 Gran Torino, and at idle it vibrates everything around. The car weighs in at 4300lbs including driver and it's running 13.5@102mph with a track altitude of 3500ft. The quarter time may not sound astonishing, but on most lower altitude tracks, its a 12 second car.
