1997 7.3 vs 2001 7.3

I am new here, love reading about all the powerstrokes issues on here .
I have a question, what is the differance between the 97 and the 01 powerstroke engines.

Mechanically they are very similar. The electronics are somewhat different. Also, the lower end is weaker on the later engines as well (powdered metal rods vs forged)

Wow thanks for the fast reply. Here is my problem.I have 97 f250 7.3. It has blown head gasket. So I found a 2001 7.3 with low miles for $1500.00. Could I use the 2001 7.3. Or would it be better to rebuild my 97.You know like new cups ,O rings, glow plugs just all new stuff in the top

Different injectors, IDM, HPOP, turbo, various wiring and sensors like Richard stated, intercooled and Hydroboost. The connecting rods are weaker, but I'm not sure what year that started.

You can use it, you'd have to change a few things. 1500 sounds real steep for a motor.

the biggest problem you would have is the 97 had a mechanical one that was driven off the cam lobe. The is the 01 had an electric fuel pump and has no came lobe to run the mechanical fuel pump.

Also the 01 engine has split shot injectors the 97(Unless cali emissions) had single shot injectors. In order to run the split shot injectors, you would need to reflash the ECM

I'd think you can fix a bad head gasket for cheaper than 1500

I can't help with a cost idea, I've only done head gaskets on gassers. My feeling about injector cups is for another 100 in parts, why not do them while you're in there if you've got the dough.

Are you sure it's a head gasket?

If you have oil and coolant mixing it is likely not a head gasket...

Richard

EDT: unless you are running crazy boost I have not heard head gaskets being an issue.

Depends on how right you want to be.
Motorcraft rebuild kit 1050$
Boring 150?
Turn crank? 90
Rod wrist pin bushings? Labor to install?
Hpop 379 for t500?
Inj cups, valvejob what not else needed for heads
Injectors at least checked if jot rebuilt?
Cam? Lifters are 25$ apiece...
Pushrods,valve springs,head studs?
The sky is the limit.I am doing one for my truck.I have not added it up.I don't wanna even admit it to myself.
Not to scare you but IF you plan to keep,do it right and the truck will do you right.

the cooler core its self could be compromised. if it were a gasser I would check for combustion gasses in the coolant. As its a diesel I am unsure if a block tester kit with the chemical will do the trick.
I also am not sure if a good machine shop or rad shop couldnt pressure test the cooler core.UNFORTUNATELY it would have to be off to do that.after that I amout of answers.
