door striker plate shim

does anyone know what the shim is for under the door striker plate on a 55 ford f100?

there is sometimes also a Striker Plate Safety Cover
on them

The ones I have are like sandpaper on both sides. They are textured so the striker plate does not move when you slam the door.

I have extras for sale if any one is interested. They are $3 each.
