New to me F250, issue

First of all...first post! Hello all!

I am sure this is covered somewhere, I have done a search through Google and different forums...but here we go. This is also my first diesel truck!

I bought a 2004 F-250 Super Duty with the 6.0 Diesel. Very aware of the different issues with this engine. As a matter of fact, right after I bought it, the dealer had to rebuild the engine since the head gasket had gone (it was a trade-in, now we know why he traded it in!)

The problem I have is that when I turn the A/C on, or even just the vent control, I get a strange smell through the vents. It does not smell like exhaust or diesel, but it is an acrid smell. Now, the strange part...it does not come through when I have it turned to "Max A/C". I do not have a recirculate option. The smell only comes through with regular A/C, heat or just the vent on. Also, when I turn it to "Off", I don't get the smell either. Only happens while idling as well.

I have read that it could be many things, including the Y-Pipe. The mechanic at the dealer was stumped, but who knows, he might have been trying to save them money, since they had to dump so much into the engine already. So I am planning to take it to another Ford dealer, but I would like to know if there are any ideas as to what it could be before I go in. I did not see any soot stains, but its hard to see behind the engine. I don't really have the ability to tear into the engine myself at the moment and the truck seems to run fine, no lights on, plenty of power (I think).

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Make them fix it! Trace where the air comes in at if it is acrid it could be electrical insulation burning. Check the wires near the engine..
