Looking at Explorer/Aviator for wife

I am not too familiar with the Explorer/Aviator, but am looking into upgrading the wife's 01 Jeep. What are some things to look for/avoid in these models? Also, are there much mechanical difference in the Aviator vs Explorer? Am looking into 03 to 05. Must be 4x4 or AWD. (Not sure 2x4 version is even available?) Thanks in advance!

All Explorers in that model year range use the 5-speed transmission, and it is pretty much the same as the 5-speed in the Aviator (although there is a suffix difference, not sure what that involves). They have some common issues, but considering the number of them on the road I'm not sure they are more prone to issues that any other transmission.

One version of the V6 in the Explorer has issues with the timing chain guides that in early stages can cause some tapping on a cold start. I think it's the SOHC engine, but you will want to search the forum if someone doesn't respond here correcting or confirming which engine it is.

The 4.6L V-8 in the Explorers is pretty reliable, although the 2003 might be prone to having issues with the 2-piece spark plugs seizing in the head. Unless the plugs have already been changed, and the seller can prove it, you might want to stick with the 2004 and 05.

The Aviator has the DOHC 4.6L V-8 that was never installed in the Explorer or Mountaineer. It is not available with 4WD, but is available with AWD. Other mechanicals between the Explorer and Aviator are pretty much identical.

Interior though is VERY different between the Explorer and Aviator, as is much of the sheet metal and some of the glass. Since the Aviator was sold in smaller numbers, if your family has a history of accidents or vehicle damage, be aware the Aviator will likely be more expensive to repair. Also, since your wife will be spending her time in the cabin, make sure she is fine with the differences there between the Aviator, Explorer, and Mountaineer. I will say the front seats in my 04 Aviator are quite a bit more comfortable than the ones in my 04 Mountaineer Premier were.

Don't forget about the Mountaineer. They can be had for the same price of an Explorer. Most of them come with the leather seats, dual climate, and other options that you would have to buy a loaded Explorer to get. They basically have the same interior and most body work unlike the Aviator. I would steer away from the V-6 models with the timing chain issues. It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to take the engine out to fix this problem. Fuel economy is the same for both. I get 20-21 on the highway with the 4.6L and 18-19 around town. Like Rod said, the Transmissions are hit and miss. People post their problems on here, but no one posts the good luck they've had when everything is working fine.

I agree... stay away from the V6 SOHC. Most of the Mountaineers are 8 cylinders, so that's where your market might be best.
