48 - 50 Jack and Handle

OK, I've been looking around, and have come up with zip. Old Gertie is missing the original jack and handle for changing tires, and I would like to find one. Used to haul around a bottle jack, and when I last drove the truck in '98 or so, I had an old screw jack of cast iron that looked like it came from a Model T. Still have that screw jack, but can't find the folding rod that turns the thing. God knows where it has gone to in my shop. Even if I did find it, I would still have to haul it around in the back of the bed where it can get all rusty again, or someone can swipe it (makes one h*ll of a racket when it sits in the toolbox behind the seat.).

So... anyone got an original type jack with the handles? I still have the thumbscrew where the jack goes to hold it down. Just need the jack.

Mine has never had one as long as I have had it, what did the original jack even look like?

Howdy there aussie. Somewhere on this site, there is a thread with photos of the various jacks, and the years they were used. Some fellow had a thing for jacks, and began collecting and documenting them.

I might try to poke around tomorrow and find/post the link.

On the passenger side, inside the cab, on the floor by the end on the fuel tank (directly underneath the fuel filler neck). As you look down on the floor, you will see the rather "U" shaped cross member that is welded to the floor pan that the gas tank sits on. The jack was screwed to the top of that cross member in the corner with a thumb screw. Look for a drilled hole in the area just described. There should be a captured nut on the other side of the hole. If you are lucky, there may be a thumb screw thingie that appears to serve no useful purpose, that is the mounting point.

Ahh, ok. I had seen the hole and the nut but had no idea what they were for. The screw is long gone. I just bought an F5 to get a good bonnet, hopefully it might have one, it has the tool box on top of the tank that mine was missing.

Was looking at some of the resto pics. of your truck (very good job, by the way), and the photo of you sitting in it without the seat, the longitudinal brace the backside of your backside is resting against, is the member the jack is attached to the top of. While on my truck, it is mounted in the corner directly to your right, yours, if it follows everything else that is backwards on those foreign trucks, will be in the corner to your left.

I recently learned from Chuck Mantiglia that the F-1 and F-2 models shared the same jack, while the F-3 and Parcel Delivery used a different jack. I'm in the same boat looking for a correct jack(s) for my trucks. The F-1/2 is 81C 17080-B while the F-3/P.D. is 82Y 17080-B. Jack handle is different too. F-1/2 is 48 17081-B and the F-3/P.D. is 82Y 17081-B. If you don't find one somewhere else, the guy to go to is Lin Stacey. He's the tool guru for the EFV8 Club. He also is a collector, restorer, and seller of tools. I'll not put his email address here, but I'll give it to you if you do me a p.m. Stu
