Poor Idle

I have a 95 explorer with an idle problem. When I come to a stop, the idle falls very low. If I give the gas pedel a tap, the idle will come up, and remain up until I come back to a stop. This starts after the engine has warmed up, and happens most, but not all the time. The idle, when in park, rises and falls slightly.
Thanks!

Welcome to FTE Steve!

I would first change the fuel filter. Sounds like there is not enough fuel getting through, and the pressure is dropping.

Poor Idle

I would try cleaning the IAC, or it could be a bad TPS (throttle
position sensor).....

Welcome to FTE!!!!

Poor Idle

Thanks CobraXP!

I had to have the fuel pump replaced about two years ago. At that time the filter was replaced, and the fuel system flushed. Following a differant thread I tried cleaning the IAC, making the idle problem worse (hence my latest post) and cleaned the MAF. Following the test procedures in my shop manual, I tested the voltage to the IAC with the key on, which was good, and then checked the risistance across the IAC prongs. The manual states 5ohms, I read none, so I think I have a short across the solenoid??

Did you read 0 OHMS, or inifinite ? 0 OHMS would be a short,
infinite would be an open....sounds like your IAC is bad...

Bob- I read 10 ohms today with a digital meter. So it appears not to be a short. To me, all arrows point to the IAC, but when it comes to sensors and other engine management, I am far from knowlageable. Could cleaning the MAF added to my problems? Thanks for all the input!

The MAF is very fragile and can be easily damaged by cleaning
it. There is also some electrical tests you can do to the TPS.
Have you done these tests to the TPS??

Another thing you can do is scan for codes, have you done this?

Good luck!!!

When I cleaned the MAF, I shot some gum-out at the filiments without removeing it from the surounding assembly, for fear of damage. I have tested the TPS, and according to the vague troubleshooting guidlines in my repair book, it checks out ok. I've never scanned codes before. When scanning codes, will the code resulting from my idle problem be stored, or do the code need to be read while the problem is occuring (while it is idling poorly)? Could cleaning the IAC have dammaged it? My idle problems have become much worse after cleaning it (it was pretty dirty).
Thanks again Bob.

Yes, the codes should be stored. If you don't have a scanner,
you can take it to AUtozone, or Advance Auto and have the
codes scanned for free....
